Marano
di Valpolicella Municipality is 20 kilometres north-west of the city of Verona.
It is part of the Valpolicella Classica area.
The landscape of hills and valleys, sloping down towards the
plain which is home to the hamlets of Pezza, with its church
of Santa Maria Valverde, Prognol, Purano, Mondrago, Carazzole,
Paverno, Badin, Canova, Fasanara, Pozzo with its church, Torre,
and Villa, gives a feeling of serenity, warmth and relaxation
as we discover the many secrets of its past.
Remains range from the Neanderthal period about 50,000 years
ago, discovered at the Solinas
refuge, up to the Reti castellieri
culture of 3,000 years ago.
The deposits of flint in the area explain the significant
human presence during that period. This stone, which was
worked and then used for the production of arms and tools,
was the object of trade with peoples living beyond the Alps.
Ötzi, or Similaun Man, was carrying with him flints manufactured
in this zone.

The
Marano di Valpolicella landscape is a link between the plain of Verona
and the Park of Lessinia.
Its central location between the mountains, the city
of Verona and Lake
Garda make it the perfect place to escape to for a
moment of peace and quiet.
The changeable scenery, varying with the season and altitude,
allows us to admire its natural beauty in all its many different
forms; from the colours of cherry blossom to the warmer, brighter
hues of autumn with its odours of wine must.
Nature’s beauty is still locked in the land and its rocks,
formed 85 million years ago.
This wonderful land, now hills, now mountains, was
once a seabed. Marvellous fossils are still to be found, some
of which can be seen in the Sant'Anna d'Alfaedo Museum of
Palaeontology and Prehistory.
The museum contains a 5 metre long fossilised shark, the
second longest ever found, belonging to the Upper Cretaceous
period. |
